Lovecraftian Crimsonland. Review of 20 Minutes Till Dawn

In the wake of the popularity of Vampire Survivors, quite a lot of similar games appeared, some high quality and some not so good. This is one of them, a mixture of a newfangled bestseller and a distinguished veteran. Early access.

The game is announced for the Windows platform.

The gameplay involves surviving under attacks from waves of enemies for a certain period of time.

There are two modes. Something like a quick game (you can’t get achievements, but you gain account experience) – survival for 10 minutes and a normal game – you need to survive for 20 minutes (this includes experience and achievements).

If you survive the first night, new difficulty levels will be unlocked. There are sixteen of them in total (from zero to 15).

There are seven types of heroines with quite different stats and seven types of possible weapons (guns are very different in properties and mechanics of use).

At first there is no choice. We have only one hero and one weapon – a revolver.

This is a rather sad combination and the first races were not very fun. The hero moves slowly, the weapon hits weakly, there is no talk of controlling crowds of monsters, you need to cut large circles around the location just to collect the knocked out crumbs of experience. This period must be survived, but then interesting options begin.

For each attempt, we gain a certain number of account experience points and for this, new characters, weapons and runes are upgraded.

The rune system is designed almost the same as the development of passives in Vampire Survivors. Lots of upgrades, needs a lot of grinding to unlock them all.

Our fighter and gun type https://prime-slots-casino.co.uk/ are selected at the very beginning of the level; they cannot be changed during the game session. Weapons must be aimed and fired manually. There is a reloading mechanism, automatic (if the entire magazine is empty) or manually (if necessary).

Enemies come in dense crowds, sometimes (as far as I understand – strictly on time) elite enemies and bosses come.

Strong enemies drop chests with additional passive upgrades when they die.

There is a set of experience inside the level (not saved for the account), for which we get random various improvements. This could be an effect for a shot, a fast run, an assistant or something else, there are many variations. In addition, power-ups have several stages of development, we open them gradually (but taking into account the randomness of the drop).

In the settings menu there is a line "Synergy". Here are the pumping options and what additional effects it can give. Just like in Vampire Survivors – to develop special skills you had to collect combinations of skills and passives.

Let’s look at the pros and cons of the game and summarize.

+ Simple but nice (with nuances that are plus/minus) graphics.

+ Just one soundtrack tune, but it doesn’t get boring. Good soundtrack.

+ Quite a lot of types of heroes.

+ Quite a lot of weapons.

+ A good tree of runes (passives) for development.

+ Many options for leveling up within the race.

+ Competitive monsters and bosses.

THINGS THAT CAN BE BOTH A PLUS AND A MINUS:

+- Graphics for everyone. Everything is kind of monochromatic. The thing, according to legend, happens at night, and they also put the dark on. As a result, for me personally, it stopped catching my eye, but someone may not like this monotony.

+- There is Russian localization of the text. The design is rather sloppy, which is a minus. Available and does its job, which is a plus.

+- Fairly high difficulty. The enemies are not awesome, of course, but they are too fast relative to the hero. The kite, in my opinion, is too long in some cases.

+- Weapons do not change during the race. Although, in a wide range (depending on random leveling) the properties of the same barrel may differ in different game sessions.

– You need to survive the beginning of the game and get to good types of weapons. As for me, this stage is drawn out and the player can quite reasonably begin to yawn and “not live long enough” to see the really interesting hacks and guns.

One of the Vampire Survivors copycats that can be called worthy. Here you have to aim and shoot yourself, which brings a certain amount of action to the process.

Early Access. It was announced that the game is almost ready conceptually. New enemies, bosses, leveling up are promised (heroes and weapons will remain the same).

PS: I probably didn’t cover all the aspects, I might have missed something. I will be glad to add/correct the review or answer questions along the way in the comments.
